Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is the most important tool in Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows Embedded POSReady 7 and Windows Embedded Standard 8. It allows adding and removing feature packages or modules after Windows has been deployed.
It is also used to service Windows® images offline before deployment for example to add drivers and change international settings.

The Distribution Share contains all the feature packages and drivers that are available for your Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Windows Embedded POSReady 7 installation. It is used when installing Windows Embedded or when creating an answer file for an unattended installation.

If a device is using a Metro style app as a dedicated app and this device has a touch screen, you may not want customers to be able to access the gestures that allow them to close the app. Edge Gesture Filter enables the possibility to block each of the edge gestures (left, right, bottom, top, and each corner) individually. For example, it’s possible to enable the right charms bar, while disabling the top and left gestures that let users close a Metro style app.

extend Windows Embedded Standard functionality by supporting additional media, deployment, and servicing scenarios that are specific to embedded devices. An EULA is a legal contract between Microsoft and the end user of an application. The EULA details how the software can and cannot be used and any restrictions that the manufacturer imposes.

A Feature Package is a component in Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Windows Embedded POSReady 7 that contains files and settings for a specific feature in Windows (e.g. Internet Explorer). A feature package is stored in the distribution share and can be selected during installation with Image Builder Wizard or during configuration in Image Configuration Editor. It can also be installed or removed using the DISM command line tool.

A for Embedded Systems version is Windows version that is technically identical to the retail version (except for the product key) but with Embedded licensing. Products are longer available in the Embedded Channel than in the Retail Channel (e.g. Windows XP).

The File Based Write Filter is a filter driver that allows you to protect your runtime image from unwanted changes. The filter write-protects your image and stores all changes in a RAM overlay. After a reboot the image is back in its original state. Additionally the File Based Write Filter allows exceptions for some files and folders that should store data while the filter driver is active.

refers to a sequence of 32 hexadecimal digits which can be calculated from the content of a file. Due to the “summarization” of information, it is not possible to reverse a file hash calculation, i.e. it is impossible to recalculate the entire file content from the file hash value. The non-unambiguity of the file hash value is irrelevant in practice as the chances that two different files have an identical hash value are close to zero.

allows a rapid reboot and return to the same hibernated image over and over again. HORM works with EWF (Enhanced Write Filter).

A hotfix is a single, cumulative package that includes one or more files that are used to address a problem in a product and are cumulative at the binary and file level. A hotfix addresses a specific customer situation and may not be distributed outside the customer's organization.

Image Builder Wizard is the fastest and easiest way to build an image. You can use Image Builder Wizard to create and build a new image, or to build a new image from an existing template.

Image Configuration Editor is a key tool in Windows Embedded Standard 7 Toolkit. You can use Image Configuration Editor on your development machine to build an XML-based answer file. You then pass that answer file to the Image Builder Wizard so that it can deploy the image described by that answer file onto your target device.

ImageX is a command-line tool that enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to capture, to modify, and to apply file-based disk images for rapid deployment. ImageX works with Windows image (.wim) files for copying to a network, or it can work with other technologies that use .wim images, such as Windows Setup, Windows Deployment Services (Windows DS), and the System Management Server (SMS) Operating System Feature Deployment Pack.

An information file (.inf) provides installation instructions for drivers and also for simple applications.

A Language Interface Package is language package that builds upon a Multilingual User Interface (MUI) package to provide even more translation. E.g. if languages have most terms in common a LIP only translated specific strings for the specific language. All other strings are taken from the MUI package.

At the end of the ROM BIOS bootstrap routine, the BIOS reads and executes the first physical sector of the first floppy or hard disk on the system. This first sector of the hard disk is called the master boot record (or sometimes the partition table or master boot block). There is a small program at the beginning of this sector of the hard disk. The partition information, or partition table, is stored at the end of this sector. This program uses the partition information to determine which partition is bootable (usually the first primary DOS partition) and attempts to boot from it.

is an application that provides a graphical-user interface (GUI) and a programming framework in which consoles (collections of administrative tools) can be created, saved, and opened. It uses a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) in an environment similar to Microsoft's Windows Explorer. MMC is considered to be a container for the actual operations, and is known as a tools host.

A Module is a component in Windows Embedded Standard 8 that contains files and settings for a specific feature in Windows (e.g. Media Player). It is also possible to create custom Modules using the Module Designer. A Module is stored in the catalog and can be selected during installation with Image Builder Wizard or during configuration in Image Configuration Editor. It can also be installed or removed using the DISM command line tool.

Some versions of Windows allow you to install several MUI packages to translate the user interface into the selected language.

An OEM Pre-Installation Kit (OPK) contains the setup media needed to install several Microsoft Embedded products. It can also contain updates only.

is the wizard that runs after Setup and performs the following functions:

An Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manufactures products, e.g. a Windows Embedded device that are sold under the OEMs brand name.

A PMQ file is generated by executing the Target Analyzer Probe on the target system. It will export all the device information into a XML configuration file called devices.pmq. The resulting PMQ file can be used to import this device information into your Windows Embedded Toolkit applications, such as Image Configuration Editor or Target Designer.

provides remote display and input capabilities over network connections for Windows-based applications running on a server. RDP is designed to support different types of network topologies and multiple LAN protocols.

The Registry Filter is necessary for example when using either Enhanced Write Filter or File Based Write Filter to protect a device that has joined a domain. In this case the domain key, which changes frequently, is stored in the Windows Registry. However due to the write filter the key gets reverted to the original state on reboot. To avoid this the Registry Filter allows the exclusion of specific keys under HKLM to persist them to the disk even if a filter driver is active.

A service pack is a tested, cumulative set of all hotfixes, security updates, critical updates, and updates. Service packs may also contain additional fixes for problems that are found internally since the release of the product and a limited number of customer-requested design changes or features.
Microsoft service packs are available for download and are accompanied by a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

Stock Keeping Unit is a common term for a unique numeric identifier in a database.

The Target Analyzer Probe is a small tool that extracts the hardware information of the Windows installation it runs an. The extracted information is stored in a XML file (devices.pmq). The file can be used to import the hardware to your Windows configuration (e.g. in Target Designer or Image Configuration Editor) so that the needed drivers can be integrated into your customized Windows image.

is a minimal version of Microsoft Windows that mainly connects to a Terminal Server using Microsoft RDP.

Some Windows Embedded products require a toolkit that contains the installation media needed to setup and build your Windows Embedded image.

is the name of a secure crypto processor that can store cryptographic keys that protect information. The Trusted Platform Module offers facilities for the secure generation of cryptographic keys, and limitation of their use, in addition to a random number generator. It also includes capabilities such as remote attestation and sealed storage.

The Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format is a publicly-available image format specification that allows encapsulation of the hard disk into an individual file for use by the operating system as a virtual disk in all the same ways physical hard disks are used. These virtual disks are capable of hosting native file systems (NTFS, FAT, exFAT, and UDFS) while supporting standard disk and file operations. VHD API support allows management of the virtual disks. Virtual disks created with the VHD API can function as boot disks.

is a role-based access control (RBAC) framework that provides an administrative tool to manage authorization policy and a runtime that allows applications to perform access checks against that policy. The AzMan administration tool (AzMan.msc) is supplied as a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

The Windows Embedded Enterprise family cosists of Windows versions which are similar to the retail versions of all Windows versions, e.g. Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000, Windows 7 Ultimate, etc.
The difference between the retail version and the embedded version is only in terms of licensing.
Windows Embedded Enterprise is the easiest way to switch to Embedded as there is no need to change your current way of deployment!
