Assigned Access in Windows Embedded 8.1

Microsoft has published a new blog post that details the new "Assigned Access" feature in Windows Embedded 8.1 (Pro and Industry).

Assigned Access allows you to set up a Windows 8 App as the default shell for a specific user. Once an Assigned Access user logs in, they are immediately in the configured application — without the Start Screen or classic desktop.

This enables an easy, additional lockdown for specific users and is ideal for:

  • Kiosk terminals
  • Point of sale devices
  • Self-service machines
  • Any device where users should only access one application

How it works:

  • Configure Assigned Access through the PC Settings menu or via PowerShell
  • Assign a specific Windows 8 App to a specific local user account
  • When that user logs in, the app launches immediately and fullscreen
  • The user cannot exit to the desktop or Start Screen

More details are available in the original Microsoft Windows Embedded blog post. Contact Elbacom for assistance implementing Assigned Access in your embedded project.
