Minnowboard MAX can run Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro

The Minnowboard MAX is a X86-based small footprint device which costs about 140$ (depending on the hardware configuration). There is a special version of the new Windows 10 IoT Core for this board but now you can also do the installation of the full Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro. This is very interesting because you can now use all Embedded Features to lockdown or customize the device. It is also possible to run the system from a removeable USB-Device (normally the operating system is on the MicroSD card). I have tried to do the installation and created a small step-by-step [...]

However the biggest change for the embedded version is that is allows to sideload modern Windows Store Apps without the need of additional sideloading keys! After the update has been applied (and some settings in the local policy have been changed) it is possible to install and run any Windows Store App on the device. The new version also contains a new feature that allows showing all dependents of a specific component. This makes it easy to find out why a component gets pulled back in during dependency check. It also allows to install missing drivers easily in Windows Embedded 8 Standard. Also it allows enabling and disabling Windows Features, even if the system [...]
